Friday 13th November 2009

Friday, 13th November 2009 was the first day with  a little sunshine after a long and in many ways stressful week of uninterrupted heavy rains, violent storms – even hail – down here in Noordhoek at the tip of Africa. Yes, it’s the Cape of Storms… but this is summer! While the gardens are happy and the dams – already dried out from the scorching sun just 10 days ago – are overflowing and waterfalls are thundering down the mountains just behind us, our houses are not constructed for this kind of surprise and people who had come to enjoy the holiday season at the fairest of all Capes were condemned to stay inside. But on Friday 13th the sun made a short yet spectacular comeback…

I captured the last rays above the Atlantic Ocean as I see it from my terrace – with veils of downpours lining the horizon – and yet a promise for a glorious day to come…

Friday 13th November 2009 was also the day of the official release of the new movie “2012″ .

2012 by Roland Emmerich

2012

2012 is an action-disaster film by Roland Emmerich following the “2012 phenomenon” – which is basically the belief that transformative or cataclysmic events will occur in 2012.

You may remember “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004), another grand movie by Roland Emmerich – also filled with dark predictions one may share or not, however, the cinematography and Special Effects are something else and absolutely worth seeing! Besides, there’s always a heart-warming family story enveloping the rather dark and destructive theme and giving it a human touch and positive overtone.

Thinking back, I remember the fantastic Opening Ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games on a Friday, 13th August, 2004… and when looking into future natural events we are expecting a close encounter with asteroid 2004MN4  – 99942 Apophis – on Friday, 13th April, 2029.

So while the superstition around Friday, 13th may originate from the times of the Knights Templars – who were mass-arrested on Friday, October 13, 1307  in France – and these ancient memories were recently revived by the successful novel and movie  “The Da Vinci Code” . . . things are always what we make of them – and in that sense I saw the golden sunset on Friday 13th November as a promise – and today was indeed a beautiful day compared with what we had before.

I just came back from a nocturnal stroll in Kalk Bay harbour – uniquely picturesque even at night with all the fishermen, the wild sea with its tranquilizing noise and salty fragrance and the many colourful lights shimmering under a dark sky… and yes! tomorrow will definitely be another great day!
